The Acura RDX is already an impressive and well-rounded compact crossover but with the new Volvo XC60 and names like the BMW X3 and Audi Q5 as the rivals, this model must be even better in order to stay competitive. Positioned as the second-best selling vehicle in Acura’s hierarchy after the recently redesigned MDX and above the updated TLX sedan, the RDX certainly deserves the full attention. This model was all-new for the 2013 model year and refreshed for the 2016 version. However, judging by available spy shots, Acura is working seriously on the new 2018 Acura RDX. What Honda’s luxury division is hiding under the thick camouflage we will try to discover in this review.
2018 Acura RDX: CR-V’s shape, Acura’s elements
The current generation of the RDX is based on the previous generation of Honda’s CR-V which now sits on the Civic’s 10th generation platform. Judging by the contours of the prototype model, it seems that under the camo, 2018 Acura RDX hides slightly larger and boxier body than the current generation model. The shape seems to be very similar to the newest CR-V and don’t forget that redesigned CR-V is also slightly bigger and commodious inside.
On the other hand, what the prototype failed to hide is Acura’s new pentagonal grille with brand’s badge in the middle. This design debuted in the production on the 2016 MDX and the 2018 TLX sedan also bears that grille style. The grille resides between updated headlight design while the camo hides the front bumper.
The pronounced character line and flared fender can be detected on model’s profile. The rear side seems to have a new graphic for the taillights. The dual exhaust tips integrated into the rear bumper adds sports flair.
Unfortunately, the spy photos don’t give us the peek inside. We believe that model will expand interior capacity and offer fresh materials. The newest infotainment system will be standard as well as the AcuraWatch suite. This active safety tech package will include adaptive cruise control, road departure mitigation, lane keeping assist, automatic braking and low-speed follow.
Other standard features should be 18-inch wheels, power seats, dual-zone climate control, a power liftgate, etc.
2018 Acura RDX: Power department
Under the hood, the current RDX hides a 3.5-liter V-6 engine. Combined with the six-speed auto transmission it is good for 279 hp and torque of 252 lb-ft. For the new 2018 Acura RDX, we expect to migrate toward the turbocharged engine. That was the case with the first-generation of this model. A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine similar to the version which should power the new Accord should also provide enough power and better fuel economy in the new RDX.
Expect also the new transmission system and the possibility is also the hybrid version sometime in the later phase.
2018 Acura RDX: Arrival
The new 2018 Acura RDX should go on sale in 2018. The model would likely debut in the second half of this year. It is still early to have an estimation about the price.
