The new and redesigned BMW X3 is coming closer to the debut which is expected in upcoming months. Bavarian Sports Activity Vehicle code-named G01 was already spotted several times while testing in the city but BMW also released a set of pictures showing this model while doing tests in winter conditions somewhere in the Sweden. From what we know so far and what we can see from the pictures, the third generation 2018 BMW X3 G01 will be more aggressively styled and larger. But despite larger, new version will be lighter and more efficient. Expect also the plug-in hybrid as well as the M-badged version to follow the four- and six- cylinder diesel and petrol-powered models.
2018 BMW X3 G01: Design, Platform
Despite that all pictures we have showing the prototype covered with the swirly two-tone camo, it is obvious that 2018 BMW X3 G01 is more aggressively styled than the version it replaces. Model’s nose is angled toward the ground and the hood has more aggressive creases. The new X3 also sports the massive split kidney grille and modernized headlights. The front bumper also houses larger air intakes and more aggressive approach can also be detected on model’s profile. The strong character line running over the side panels and the rear quarter part of the roof line seem to be lower. The rear side adopts similar taillights as the X1 and muscular bumper.
Bellow the athletic new sheet metal, the new X3 transfer to the new platform. The old 3-series architecture gives way to the rear-wheel-drive based, modular CLAR platform. A modern and lighter design of this platform provides lighter but stiffer structure allowing also an implementation of the latest safety, infotainment and comfort features. The new platform will also sit on the longer wheelbase. The model will also be both longer and wider and therefore roomier inside. However, despite larger in size, the new X3 should be around 220 pounds lighter and therefore more efficient.
Inside the cabin, the new X3 will be a familiar place. However, a longer wheelbase and wider stance will provide more relaxed rear comfort. The model should also come with the newly designed instrument panel. On the other hand, we should expect similar layout of the audio and HVAC controls as well as atop of dash mounted infotainment display.
2018 BMW X3 G01: Powertrains
The new generation 2018 BMW X3 G01 will get the motivation from the updated turbocharged and direct injected four- and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. The range of diesel units should include two 2.0-liter B47 engine versions and new-gen 3.0-liter diesel known as B57. A 2.0-liter turbo inline-four petrol engines will also be available alongside with the B58 turbo straight six petrol.
The transmissions should come in forms of 6-speed manual and 9-speed automatic units. Of course, the sDrive rear-wheel and xDrive all-wheel drive models will be available.
In addition to that, BMW also promised to offer the plug-in version in the later phase. Expect the plug-in model to use familiar technology combining a 2.0-liter turbo petrol and an electric motor for the total output around 250 hp.
But you should also leave the room for the M performance version. Expect the performance X3 with the 3.0-liter inline-6 turbo and a potential number of ponies around 425.
2018 BMW X3 G01: Arrival
BMW is still tight-lipped about model’s debut and price. However, the 2018 BMW X3 G01 is expected to break covers in June. It should make the official premiere at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It should hit dealerships in October. The M range topper should arrive closer to mid-2018.
