Extremely popular BMW X3 will enter to its third generation for the 2018 model year. This mid-size crossover SUV wins the hearts of its buyers with practicality, high-quality luxurious cabin but also with a strong performance, efficiency and responsive handling. However, the upcoming 2018 BMW X3 promises to be better on all fronts.
What will be changed?
The new generation X3 is expected to evolve in lighter, more spacious model with sharper styling and more powerful powertrains. The latest BMW technology will also come with the new platform but performance M version, as well as plug-in hybrid version, should follow.
2018 BMW X3: Platform, Design
The new 2018 BMW X3 will enter to the new generation based on the new lightweight, scalable CLAR -architecture. This platform had its debut in the 2016 7-Series and new X3 will be the first SUV adopting this structure while the X5 and X7 will follow. The new platform will help this model to lose some of its weight (around 220 lbs) while will also be compatible with the plug-in hybrid powertrain and new technology.
As for the styling of the new X3, the prototype that was spotted recently suggests an evolution toward sharper-sculpted design. The model will continue with the split kidney grille design but units seem to have grown a bit. Slender headlights with LED accents will bracket the grille and front bumper will get larger intakes. Model’s profile will feature sharp, rising character line and flared wheel arches. Slightly lower roofline will also give it sportier profile appearance.
Interior design will likely follow a similar path as the newest BMW models. The dash will hold tablet-like infotainment screen and digital instrument cluster will be in front of the new steering wheel.
BMW will, of course, use the high-quality materials and rich textures for model’s interior and supportive seats with power, heating and ventilating features will provide utmost. The model should also slightly grow in size which will open more space for the passengers.
Following BMW’s top-notch interior comfort will be cutting-edge connectivity and safety technology. The model will get upgraded current infotainment and safety features with the inclusion of the new advanced safety systems.
2018 BMW X3: Powertrains
In the engine department, the 2018 BMW X3 will come with a broad range of petrol and diesel units which availability will depend on the selected market. A 2.0-liter turbo-four engine will produce around 250 hp while a 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 should return around 325 hp.
There will also be a diesel and plug-in hybrid version as well. The plug-in hybrid should use a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with electric motors for the total power of around 308 hp, similarly as on the X5 version.
The model will be available with both rear- and all-wheel drive and it will also get familiar transmission system.
As we said earlier, the M version will also arrive to compete with high-performance rival models. The model will have more aggressive appearance, sport-tuned suspension and engine with the 400-plus hp output.
2018 BMW X3: Arrival, Price
The all-new generation 2018 BMW X3 will come in early 2017. Expect the price to start slightly above the current, from around $42, 000.
