BMW X5 rates as one of the top models in crowded, highly competitive mid-size SUV class. Strong and efficient powertrains, comfortable and luxurious interior, long list of features and customization options are definitely winning combination and this model delivers just that. But BMW is always thinking of its next move and sooner than we expected it is going to offer new generation of this car. The fourth generation of this model will come as 2018 BMW X5 and it promises to be new from ground up.
New for 2018:
The new iteration of the X5 won’t have much common with its predecessor. The latest reports suggest that this model will ride on the new platform and should also grow in size. Changes will also affect its styling and interior. The model will also advance in technology and safety aspects.
2018 BMW X5: New Platform, Design
The BMW is building the new 2018 BMW X5 form the ground up. The model transfers to the new platform which made its debut on the 7-Series sedan in 2016. Called CLAR or shortly known as Cluster Architecture, this modular platform will also underpin upcoming models from X Series compact X3 and new flagship X7 SUV. It implements combination of steel, aluminum, carbon fiber plastic and magnesium in its structure. This mix provides better rigidity while saving weight. As the result notable weight reduction will improve models fuel efficiency but its structure also promises better performance.
About styling, we can’t tell you much. Prototype that was spotted testing doesn’t uncover much. It has full body camouflage that hides every inch. But what can be seen from it contours the overall shape is much similar to the current version but it seem to be slightly larger. We can’t detect how much it grown but we should expect more comfortable interior.
At closer inspection of the front fascia, it also looks that this side gets new interpretation of the split kidney grille and narrower headlights. Hood looks also reshaped as the profile lines. By relaying on the rear construes, the tailgate area looks to be reshaped and new taillights protrudes under the camo.
When it comes to the interior, we should expect more space and tech advancement. For better comfort BMW will provide top-notch upholstery and well-shaped seats. Some changes in dash design and textures will also provide new, more modern feel.
Expect also the next generation infotainment system with the gesture control like in the new 7-Series. Smartphone compatibility, navigation, strong sound systems will of course be in offer with many other tech features. Multi way adjustable and heated front seats will also be standard. Each upper trim will upgrade comfort and tech features.
2018 BMW X5: Performance
Powering the new 2018 BMW X5 will be range of the turbocharged six and eight cylinder engines. At this moment we can tell more specifics about these engines. We should expect improvements in efficiency, emissions and performance.
On the other hand, short after introduction of the conventional model a plug-in hybrid will follow. Not long after, we should also expect performance-oriented M version.
We don’t know about diesel engine for the US market, but some sources claim that BMW is committed to continue selling disels in this market.
