The new 2018 Chevrolet Traverse is coming as the all-new vehicle. Chevrolet has surprised with some moves but the new Traverse promises to attract new buyers and to keep the current fan base. It hasn’t been redesigned since its 2009 model year introduction and now this full-size truck-based SUV enters to its second generation of existence. Let’s see what we know about this new vehicle.
New for 2017:
The upcoming Traverse is new from ground up. The model comes on the new platform and boasts roomier cabin thanks to slight size and wheelbase increase. It also features bolder, more truckish look and also adds a new turbocharged four-cylinder engine. The latest technology features are also available in the new model as well as two new trims.
2018 Chevrolet Traverse: Platform, Design
The new-generation 2018 Chevrolet Traverse is the all-new vehicle and it comes based on the new platform. The previous generation of this model used the architecture known as the Lambda but the 2018 version switches to the new GM’s mid-size crossover platform called C1XX. This modern design has already been used on the latest GMC Acadia and Cadillac XT5. The new structure is stiffer and lighter which made the new model about 362 lbs lighter.
The new Traverse is lighter but on the other hand, it has grown in length by 0.2 inches while rides on the 2.0 inches longer wheels base. The longer wheelbase translates to the roomier interior which has already been one of the most spacious in its class.
With the new structure and dimensions comes also a new exterior design. The Traverse adopts bolder more truck-like look. Its front fascia is similar as on the new Equinox while the rear end shares some similarities with the latest Acadia.
The grille gets the hexagonal form which sits lower than new headlights while the upper portion is in the line with the lighting units. The new Traverse also features squared-off fenders and sharp character line which connects front and rear lights. There is also body-colored C-pillar and upright side glass behind it. The model also sports new taillights and will get 18- and 20-inch aluminum wheels.
Inside the cabin, the new Traverse features modern design and expanded passenger and cargo space. An additional 2-inches in its wheelbase adds more space behind each seating row and model will boast best in class cargo capacity of 98.5 cubic feet. With all sits in function, it will offer 23 cu ft and with active middle row 58.1 cu ft.
In the cabin of the new Traverse, you will also find plenty of clever storage compartments and model will also include USB charging ports in all seating rows. Aside from that, the Traverse will come with the latest technologies. Available will be a 7- and 8-inch infotainment screens, Apple Car Play and Android Auto compatibility, 4G LTE Wi-Fi, voice commands, etc.
It will also have an automatic tailgate which can be opened with the sweep of the foot under the tailgate.
What is also important, the model will include active safety features such as forward collision warning and automatic braking, active line control, surround-view system, Teen Driver feature, adaptive cruise control, etc.
As for the trim options, it will offer L, LS, LT and Premier options with the addition of the new RS and top High Country. The RS version derives from the LT trim and adds more aggressive appearance and black wheels. It also includes the new four-cylinder engine. The High-Country features richer materials, unique grille, upscale exterior, polished wheels, etc.
2018 Chevrolet Traverse: Powertrains, MPG
Under the hood of the all 2018 Chevrolet Traverse except the RS will sit a more powerful 3.6-liter V-6 engine. It is good for 305 hp and can produce 260 lb-ft of torque. All models will come with the new 9-speed automatic transmission which helps it to achieve a better fuel economy.
The standard front-wheel drive will earn 18 mpg in city and 25 mpg highway. The all-wheel drive will be an option. The models powered with the V-6 engine will allow up to 5, 000 pound of towing capacity and GM promises that 60 mph will be achievable in less than 7 seconds.
On the Traverse RS, the Chevy will install the new turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 engine. This unit will produce 255 hp. The fuel economy will be around 15 mpg city and 22 mpg highway.
2018 Chevrolet Traverse: Availability, Price
The new 2018 Chevrolet Traverse will be available this fall. The automaker hasn’t said anything about model’s price. However, we should expect the L, LS, LT and RS trims in the range between $30-40k while the Premier and High Country models will cost slightly above that.
