The next and fully-redesigned 2018 Ford Expedition is coming soon. The prototype which seems to be in the late phase of testing has been caught wrapped in the camouflage that hides a lot but also indicates serious changes. The model is expected to make a debut at the next Detroit Auto Show while will enter to production in the upcoming summer. Let’s see what this full-size SUV brings.
The new and most spacious Ford’s SUV will again bring massive towing and hauling capabilities and will also rely on the tested strategy. It will continue on the truck-based underpinning and will also use truck’s running gear including powertrains. Its source is, of course, the best-selling F-150 and the next Expedition will take the best from the best.
2018 Ford Expedition: Platform, Design
The new 2018 Ford Expedition will continue to be a true truck-based full-size SUV with all truck’s capabilities. It will transition to the new T3 underpinning which has been tested and proven on Ford’s light-duty truck. That means fully-boxed, high-tensile steel chassis and new suspension configuration. However, the Expedition will also get aluminum body construction as the F-150 which will bring significant weight save.
In the same manner, the exterior styling will also borrow the inspiration from the F-Series design. It will get a more aerodynamic design with more raked windshield and sleeker lines. The front fascia will feature similar grille and headlights as the F-150 but it will be the smaller interpretation of them.
The profile side will exhibit strong belt line and there will also be huge rear windows. The raked rear glass and new taillights will define model’s rear side.
Interior, Features, Safety:
Interior will offer huge passenger and cargo space but the design remains a mystery at this moment. However, we could bet that cabin will also get Ford trucks’ treatment. In that way, Ford will keep production cost in check and will also speed the design process.
Tech-wise, the model will get the latest Sync 3 infotainment system and driver’s information display. There will also be the latest safety systems like blind-spot, monitoring, surround view camera, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, etc.
2018 Ford Expedition: Powertrains
For the engine options, the 2018 Ford Expedition won’t also go away from the last F-150. The redesigned 3.5-liter turbocharged EcoBoost V-6 will also power the new Expedition model. Under the hood of the F-150, this engine produces 375 hp and torque of 470 lb-ft but we don’t know its output ratings for the new Expedition.
The 3.5-liter EcoBoost will likely sit under the hood of higher-spec versions or will be available as an option. On the other hand, we expect to see a 2.7-liter EcoBoost version as the base engine. It produces 325 hp and torque of 375 lb-ft in Ford’s truck and comes with a six-speed automatic gearbox. A 6-six speed transmission might also be available in the new SUV but a new 10-speed automatic will also be at disposal.
2018 Ford Expedition: Launch date, Price
As for the price of the 2018 Ford Expedition, we should expect a certain increase because of modern upgrades. The current version starts from around $46, 000 but we will see where the new model price will begin. On the other hand, the production will start next summer.
