If we compare the Ford Flex with modern three-row crossover SUVs, we found that main reason why you should buy this model is if you want to stand out from the crowd. With its unusual styling with boxy body and upright greenhouse, this model can’t surely pass unnoticed. It also has spacious and versatile cabin while its turbocharged engine provides plenty of power. However, since its introduction in 2009 this model only received a serious update for the 2013 model and now it is one of the oldest SUV’s on the market.
It seems also that Ford doesn’t see the future potential of this model and it revealed plans to discontinue this car after 2019 model year. Ford hasn’t said but based on the recent reports it would not invest much in the new 2018 Ford Flex and it should come with some basic updates.
2018 Ford Flex: Design
From the visual perspective, Ford Flex has some similarities with British styling sense when comparing it with Range Rovers and Mini Coper especially its sides. On the other hand, up front, its single bar grille and headlights has some similarities with Ford’s newest trucks. However, despite we can draw some similarities with such popular vehicles, the Flex definitely needs more modern design approach in order to appeal new buyers. But, as wee said earlier, the 2018 Ford Flex might be the last version of this model and Ford won’t likely change much on this model.
New color options, new wheel designs, and some low-cost updates could be seen on this model but we don’t expect any significant change.
Inside, thanks to the boxy shape, this model will provide plenty of the space for passengers and even the third row will be adult-friendly. However, if all seats are up, you can count on up to 20 cu ft of cargo space. When the third row in not in use, available will be 43.2 cubes while with both rear rows folded flat there will be 83.2 cubes.
On the other hand, the Flex will have decently comfortable seats and Ford might add fresh materials and even the new trim option.
The model will also include Sync 3 infotainment system with 8-inch touchscreen and smartphone compatibility. You will be able to upgrade the interior with the wood trim and features like ambient lighting, premium sound system, ventilated seats, power and heated steering wheel, leather upholstery and much more.
The Flex will also have the safety systems like the adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, forward collision warning but Ford might also add automatic emergency braking and more of advanced features.
2018 Ford Flex: Performance
In the engine department, 2018 Ford Flex will likely keep the current engine options. However, some reports suggest that new turbocharged engine could be available to replace the base V-6 and even new transmission could be thrown in the combination.
However, we expect the same engine options. The base 3.5-liter V-6 can produce 287 hp and torque of 254 pound-feet. The six-speed transmission directs power to the front wheels while optionally you can get all-wheel drive.
However, if this engine won’t satisfy your demands, the Flex should also come with the 3.5-liter turbocharged V-6. This engine will produce around 365 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. With standard four-wheel drive, this engine will push this model to 60 mph in around 6 seconds.
Both engines will provide the towing capacity of around 4, 500 pounds.
2018 Ford Flex: Arrival, Price
Largely unchanged possibly the last version, the 2018 Ford Flex should appear by the end of this year. The base versions should cost from around $31, 000.
