The all-new, second generation, luxury, compact crossover from Infiniti’s courtyard comes as the 2018 Infiniti QX50. Thanks to the pictures of the pre-production prototype we know that new QX50 won’t depart far from the Powerful Elegance design which Infiniti presented on the Concept model at this year’s Detroit Auto Show.
The model will also come based on the new platform and will get brand’s new variable compression turbocharged engine. The new QX50 should also improve with new tech and safety features with the possible introduction of ProPilot self-driving technology. More precise details should emerge closer to expected debut later this year. However, let’s see what we know so far.
2018 Infiniti QX50: Design
The new generation 2018 Infiniti QX50 will ditch the current FM architecture in favor of the new traverse-engine platform which has Mercedes roots. This platform is not the one that underpins the Infiniti QX30 and Mercedes GLA. It has different proportions and we will see which Mercedes will also be based on it.
On the other hand, based on the spy photos, we can expect that new QX50 will feature muscular curves and proportions from the Concept model. The mesh grille very similar as on the concept will continue to the production and model will also have narrow headlights with nice accents. The front bumper should, however, be different on the production version having larger air inlets than the concept model.
The profile seems to follow very similar contours as the concept vehicle while the rear side should feature a slightly different shape of taillights and rear bumper in the contrast to the concept.
Interior and technology:
The interior side of the story should also follow the base principles and the QX50 concept. The model will have the wide center screen and nicely trimmed dash and door panels. The digital cluster will be available in upper trims as well as more luxuries.
Infiniti should also offer a new self-driving technology which also will use Nissan. The ProPilot technology should allow cruising on the highway while the model should also be able to crawl in traffic and be aware of other surrounding vehicles by itself. It will also include other now common active safety systems.
2018 Infiniti QX50: Powertrain
Under the hood of the new 2018 Infiniti QX50 should be brand’s new VC-Turbo inline-4 engine. The variable compression turbocharger technology can vary compassion ratio in order to provide better efficiency or performance. The engine operates on the 8:1 compression ratio for high performance and switches to 14:1 compression ratio to improve the efficiency. The 2.0-liter turbocharged engine should produce 268 hp and torque of 288 pound-feet.
The transmission system should be the CVT and there will be an option for the all-wheel drive. The new powertrain should provide 27 percent improved fuel economy compared to the current version.
The new generation model should debut as the 2018 Infiniti QX50 this fall. The base price is expected to reach $37,000.
