The debut of the new-generation Jeep Wrangler is closing and we expect more concrete details closer to its expected premiere at the next Los Angeles Auto Show. However, the prototype of the JK Wrangler successor, the JL Wrangler was caught several times while testing camouflaged in different occasions and in different forms. So, we will definitely see two-door and Unlimited versions again and Jeep promises more efficient Wrangler but with equal or even better off-road capability.
With some limited styling changes and better technologically equipped interior, Jeep should also bring more engine options including the diesel one. Among other versions, Jeep will also offer the hardcore off-road version, the 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Unlimited Rubicon.
2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Unlimited Rubicon: Traditional design and Styling
Jeep already promised that new generation Wrangler will continue to exploit rugged body-on-frame design and solid axle formula. The styling of the new Wrangler won’t also go far from the traditional formula but Jeep will bring some aluminum in the play in order to save some pounds and improve efficiency. Its role, an aluminum will likely have in forming the hood, door and tailgate.
Styling wise, the Wrangler won’t change much. The grille will differ slightly and Jeep will reposition the fog lights to the ends of the front bumper. The new Wrangler will also move the turn signal on the fenders and will also include Side mirrors-located turn signals. Expect also, the Wrangler JL to keep removable doors and roof but with some innovations in roof design. Other changes should include the new pull door handles and Compass-inspired taillights.
The 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Unlimited Rubicon will incorporate mentioned changes but will also include 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, specific logos and tires.
When it comes to the interior, the latest spy shots reveal slightly changed dashboard with larger center display and familiar circular air vents. So, the new Wrangler should make the use of the latest Uconnect 3.0 infotainment system and Rubicon Unlimited should get an 8.4-inch touchscreen. The Rubicon version should also include features like the power windows and locks, power and heated mirrors, heated seats, automatic climate control, leather upholstery and more. Jeep might also add some advanced safety systems.
2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Unlimited Rubicon: Powertrain
The new generation Wrangler will expand the current engine offer. The 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 should return in the better from and in two states of tuning. The new option should be a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine again available in two power states. The most fuel-efficient Wrangler should have the diesel engine under the hood. A 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 dubbed the Hurricane is rumored as the possible solution. Some reports also suggesting a 2.2-liter diesel burner.
Jeep will again offer a six-speed manual gearbox but smoother shifting and better efficiency should also be achievable thanks to the new 8-speed automatic unit.
On the other hand, the 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Unlimited Rubicon will also include additional hardcore off-road hardware. It will rely on the heavy-duty front axle, specific axle gearing, electronic locking differentials front and rear, upgraded transfer case, etc.
2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Unlimited Rubicon: Arrival, Price
The new generation Wrangler should go on the sale shortly after the expected Los Angeles Show premiere. We expect the price to go slightly upward. The 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL Unlimited Rubicon should be available from slightly above $38, 000.
