Kia Niro might be the perfect solution for you if you are looking for the car with the crossover-like styling but with the hybrid powertrain only. This car is the first crossover built as the hybrid only and sold in the US. It debuted at the 2016 Chicago Auto Show and sales starts in early 2017. So, the 2018 Kia Niro will be the second version of this model but it might bring some notable changes.
New for 2018:
So, the Niro is the newcomer in the US market and you currently can get it with the gas-electric powertrain and front-wheel drive only. It also comes in four trim levels. For the 2018 model year, the Niro should offer upgraded trim levels, new color options and there should be some changes in the price. However, the next version of Niro should also include a plug-in hybrid variant.
2018 Kia Niro: Styling
The Niro is car-based crossover and it sits on the same platform as the Kia Ioniq. It features the shape and proportions that are very close to the wagon vehicle but crossover design cues are also obvious. Kia calls its design “strong and confident” and it indeed looks close to other Kia’s SUVs and atypical for the hybrid vehicle.
It features smooth lines and rounded shapes and also includes crossover-like attributes such as lower body cladding, large and sculpted fenders, roof rails, rear skid plate and so on. On the other hand, the lower ride height, wider stance and upright tailgate are features that are closer to the wagon models.
The Niro also includes Kia’s signature tiger nose grille, sculpted hood edges, nice headlights and sporty bumpers. Important also is model’s low drag coefficient of 0.29 which is very good for any utility vehicle.
Like the exterior, interior design of the 2018 Kia Niro won’t change. More standard features and upgraded tech are possible upgrades.
However, the model will feature conventional but stylish design. It will be built with high-quality materials, soft surfaces, and contrasting trim inserts.
The cabin of the Niro will also be comfortable and spacious for the passengers and their cargo. The front seats will have a high position, higher than on the sedans. Kia will use seat frames from the Optima sedan which will guarantee long ride comfort. The Niro will also offer the cargo capacity of 19.4 cu ft with all seats up and maximum capacity of 54.5 cu ft.
The new Niro will available in four trim levels including FE, LX, EX and top Touring. All models will include LED headlights, dual-zone climate control, steering wheel audio controls, a 4.2-inch instrument display, a 7-inch screen infotainment system with smartphone compatibility, etc.
Higher trims will add for lights, LED taillights, upgraded 8-inch infotainment system, 10-way power adjustable driver’s seat, heated and ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, premium Harman Kardon sound system, etc.
For the safety purposes, it will include the package of active drive aids. There will be parking sensors, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic braking, blind-spot monitoring, etc.
2018 Kia Niro: Performance
The powertrain of the 2018 Kia Niro will include a 1.6-liter direct-injected four-cylinder engine, electric motor, a six-speed dual-clutch transmission and lithium-ion battery pack which sits between the rear wheels. The gasoline engine can produce 104 hp. With 43-hp electric motor total output is around 140 hp and 195 pound-feet of torque. The battery pack has the capacity of 1.6 kWh in the current version.
The gasoline engine operates on the more efficient Atkison cycle and the Niro should return 52 mpg city and 49 mpg highway.
On the other hand, the new plug-in hybrid version should include an 8.9-kWh battery and a more powerful electric motor. Kia promises the all-electric range of 25 miles with this plug-in hybrid version.
