Kia Soul has proven to be the successful story for the South Korean Brand despite some similar, boxy-shaped vehicles already left the production. Kia redesigned the Soul for the 2014 model year and all electric version arrived a year after. The 2017 version benefits from the turbocharged engine and more standard features while the EV version is unchanged. As for the 2018 Kia Soul, there haven’t been indications that Kia is preparing some significant updates for the conventionally powered versions. However, the Soul EV is reported to boost its electric range plus it could feature some interior and styling tweaks.
2018 Kia Soul: Design
The current generation Soul is somewhat more aggressively styled than the iteration before but Kia hasn’t changed much the base principles of the original. The model manages to be appealing to the buyers despite the boxy profile, chunky front end and upright rear could lead to the disaster.
In the context of the styling, the 2018 Kia Soul isn’t expected to change much and we could see only new details. The EV model could, however, get more notable tweaks but nothing radical.
The front end will continue with the slim tiger nose grille while the headlights could be modernized. The front and rear bumpers will feature pronounced contours and combined with the profile body lines will add to model’s appearance.
Inside the Kia Souls hasn’t been imaged to impress but the material quality, comfort and equipment availability are good. The interior also features some sporty bits and controls are easy to use. The boxy greenhouse provides plenty of the headroom but passengers will also feel comfortable in the rear.
The Soul will also offer the luxuries like the leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, power adjustable front seats, an 8-inch touchscreen interface, etc. but expect most of these in the top trim. The base version will, however, come on the 16-inch wheels and with the cloth upholstery but should gain more features than the current version.
The new model year should also bring more safety features to the lower trims and model will also offer the advanced safety kit.
2018 Kia Soul: Powertrains
Kia added the turbocharged option for the 2017 version and the 2018 Kia Soul is expected to return with the current engines. The base version will get a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine with the capability of producing 130 hp and torque of 118 pound-feet. This engine should come in the combination with either six-speed manual or automatic gearbox.
The 2.0-liter engine will work in the conjunction with automatic transmission and will deliver 161 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque. The turbocharged Soul will have a 1.6-liter under the hood and 201 hp at the disposal. The torque limit will be 195 lb-ft and the transmission is a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic.
The EV version should, however, make some changes to its power hardware. The 109 hp electric motor remains and continues to produce 210 pound-feet of torque. However, the current 27 kWh battery should free the space for the larger 30 kWh unit. The new battery is heavier with its 290 kg compared to the current 277 kg pack. But the voltage is up from 360 V to 375 V. The new battery also has more cells and all will lead to improved mileage. From the current 93 miles, the Soul EV should reach to about 113 miles.
2018 Kia Soul: Release date, Price
The 2018 Kia Soul should emerge by the end of this year. The base version should start from about $16,300 while the EV version should begin from about $33, 000.
