The iconic Land Rover Defender went out from the production in the first month of 2016 but according to the latest reports, the successor of this go-anywhere vehicle entered in the late stage of development as prototype models have already been testing. Unfortunately, Land Rover is testing the new-gen Defender at secret locations and nobody has spotted Defender mules. However, JLR’s CEO Ralf Speth said that he has driven the testing version of this model and he also hinted some details about the new Defender which in the best scenario would come as the 2018 Land Rover Defender.
What will we get?
According to information we have, British’s brand promises that new-gen Defender will be even more capable than its predecessor but will be based on the new modern architecture and will get the latest tech and powertrains. JLR has in plan to offer the base version of this model but the brand should also introduce more versions of this model. The Defender should also get the performance SVR version but hardcore SVX could also join the lineup. What’s more, the luxurious SVA version should also see the light of the day.
2018 Land Rover Defender: Design, Platform
When it comes to the design and platform of the 2018 Land Rover Defender, the confirmation already came from Mr. Ralf Speth that this model will be based on the platform of the newest Discovery, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover. That means that the new Defender will ride on the aluminum chassis and will have an aluminum body. The modern architecture will provide the significant weight loss. However, many different components will be used in order to provide the extreme durability and strength which are essential for Land Rover’s most capable off-roader.
On the other hand, the family of Defender models will ride on the two wheelbases. Like the Range Rover, the Defender will be available in the standard and long-wheelbase configurations. However, the Defenders will feature shorter overhangs and will have lifted ground clearance. This off-roader will also boast impressive approach, departure and break-over angles, greater than on other brand’s models.
The styling of the model will share some design cues with the version it replaces. However, the details about its appearance are still the secret. The model should have boxy shape and will include some form of brand’s signature elements but Land Rover promises that new Defender will be authentic.
The interior of the model is also the secret. But we don’t expect it to be the large departure from the JLR’s latest models. The Defender will surely get the latest features like the new Discovery and will also make the significant step forward in the safety aspect.
2018 Land Rover Defender: Powertrain
In the engine department, the new 2018 Land Rover Defender will likely get JLR’s four-cylinder engine from the Ingenium family. The last version of the Defender had only the diesel engine option. But the new generation of the model will likely be available with both diesel and gasoline versions. The model should also offer a larger and more powerful displacements and we also expect manual and automatic transmissions.
On the other hand, the new Defender will also get the capable four-wheel drive system. The model will offer separate low and high gear transfer case. Models will also feature full-independent suspension setup like the Range Rover and Discovery models.
2018 Land Rover Defender: Arrival, Price
Like with the other aspects of the new 2018 Land Rover Defender, nothing precise hasn’t been said about model’s release date and price. The model should, however, arrive in 2018 or even in early 2019 as the 2019 model. The first estimations about the price suggesting the base value of around $46, 000.
