Lexus will soon get the all-new and entry-level crossover SUV alongside the three-row RX. The new model will compete in the sub-compact class with models like Audi Q3, Mercedes GLA and BMW X3. The new Lexus crossover will draw inspiration from the striking UX concept that debuted at the 2016 Paris Auto Show. The sub-compact model was confirmed for the production by Lexus executive Yoshihiro Sawa at the last Geneva Motor Show and should be marketed as the 2018 Lexus UX.
The company is targeting younger buyers with the model and production version is expected to retain a high dose of concept’s expressive styling and similar dimensions. The crossover will use Toyota’s platform and model will offer both conventional and hybrid powertrains. The US will sit below the compact NX in brand’s lineup and we should consider it as the counterpart of the popular Toyota C-HR.
2018 Lexus UX: Design
While we have an official confirmation about the production of the 2018 Lexus UX, details about the model or spy photos are not available. However, the new entry-level crossover will be based on the TNGA-C platform like the Toyota C-HR and fourth-generation Prius.
On the other hand, dimensionally, the UX should stay close to the proportions of the concept model. The UX concept measures 4400 mm in length and sits on the 2640-mm wheelbase. The C-HR is also close to those numbers with 4360 mm in length and 2640-mm wheelbase. The NX which is the step higher in the lineup is 4630 mm long and has 2660-mm wheelbase.
Styling wise, the US is expected to migrate to the production with slightly toned-down styling compared to the concept car. The front will include three-dimensional spindle grille and pointing headlights. The long and sculpted hood combined with pronounced fenders and hunches will provide sportier impression when seen from the profile but shapes from the concept will be toned down for the production.
Interior of the model is the mystery like pretty much everything, but we expect much more conventionally styled cabin than what we saw in the concept version. Lexus will, of course, equip this model with the latest infotainment and safety features.
The leather upholstery and other luxury features will be up to brand’s standards as well. The Kinetic Seat Concept and e-mirror projecting screens from the concept car won’t, of course, go to the production.
2018 Lexus UX: Powertrains
When it comes to the powertrain options, the premium 2018 Lexus UX will likely offer both the conventionally powered and hybrid versions. Lexus is expected to launch two variants of this model, the UX 200 and UX 200h.
The UX200 should have a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 petrol engine under the hood. The gasoline-electric, four-wheel drive UX 200h will join the petrol and engine and electric motors for a more efficient ride. In this application, Lexus might use 2.5-liter petrol engine.
2018 Lexus UX: Arrival, Price
Lexus’s new entry-level crossover, the 2018 Lexus UX should debut late this year or early next. Some reports suggesting the start of the production in October. In that case, we should expect the US launch in early 2018 while the hybrid should follow a month later. The price, power and other details should appear soon.
