The Mazda CX-4 made its debut at the 2016 Beijing Auto Show. Earlier, Mazda showed the Koeru Concept at the 2015 Frankfurt Show which hinted the arrival of the CX-4 model. The CX-4 has about the same dimensions as the global CX-5 model and also uses the engines from the same family. However, the CX-4 features sleeker and more stylish exterior thanks to the sportier profile. Mazda currently delivers this model specifically for the Chinese market and is also working on the Japanese specific CX-8 model. As the things now stand, the 2018 Mazda CX-4 will be the carry-over model and again China-specific. So, Mazda hasn’t planned to deliver this model to the Old Continent and US but that could change in the upcoming model years.
2018 Mazda CX-4: Stylish, Coupe-like Crossover
The 2018 Mazda CX-4 continues visually unchanged with the styling which has many similarities with the CX-5 model but also inherited a lot from the Koeru Concept car.
Dimensionally, the CX-4 rides on the same wheelbase as the CX-5 which measures 106.2 inches. The width is also similar, 72.4 inches but the CX-4 is slightly longer 182.4 inches between the bumpers. That means that CX-4 has longer overhangs than the CX-5, but the model sits lower to the ground and has lower roofline.
The front end has familiar Mazda’s grille with the frame which extends to the area of the headlights. The sculpted hood and front bumper also add to model’s appearance. What also makes this model more visually interesting than the CX-5 is the coupe-like profile. But dynamic body lines on the side panels also improves the visual interest.
The rear end is also attractive and it has modern taillights connected with chrome strip and aggressive rear bumper.
Interior of the CX-4 is also Mazda’s familiar form. The center touchscreen sits atop the dash and rectangular air vents. Below are more knobs and buttons. The steering wheel and gauge cluster are also the copy from the CX-5 model.
The interior trim is also attractive with contrasting aluminum accents and stitching. The comfort and seat support is also according to Mazda’s standards but the interior comfort pays the tribute for the coupe-like design.
2018 Mazda CX-4: Powertrains
Powering options for the 2018 Mazda CX-4 will include two engines from the Skyactiv-G family. A 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine comes in the combination with either six-speed manual or automatic gearbox. Models powered by this engine will also offer the front- or all-wheel drive options.
An optional 2.5-liter four-cylinder unit comes exclusively with the six-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.
The smaller engine will deliver about 150 hp while the 2.5-liter unit will provide about 185 hp. The fuel economy with less number of ponies will be 6.4 liters per 100 km with the manual gearbox. The automatic will need 6.3 liters for 100 km. The 2.5-liter engine will consume 7.2 liters per 100 km. These ratings are for the combined cycle.
