The second generation of Mazda’s global best-seller, the CX-5 made its debut at the 2016 Los Angeles Motor Show. The new iteration of the compact crossover is the step forward on all fronts compared to its first generation. The styling has evolved to sleeker and more aggressive form while the interior features higher quality and comfort. An availability of the new and updated features is also the step forward.
Mazda also made some minor corrections on model’s proportions and improved its underpinning. The model debuted with the now base 2.5-liter inline four engine but Mazda also promised to bring the first diesel ever to the US. The 2018 Mazda CX-5 diesel will arrive this fall with the power unit that promises great performance and fuel economy.
2018 Mazda CX-5 diesel: Structure and Design
Mazda hasn’t changed the underpinning of the new-generation CX-5 but with some improvements on the first-generation design, it promises slightly lower center of gravity and better stability. Mazda has also altered the proportions of the new model but changes are minimal. The new wheelbase measures 106.3 inches while the model stretched in the length for 0.4 inches and 0.1 inches in the width.
Visually, the new CX-5 is more appealing to the eye than the previous version and probably the best-looking crossover in the class based on our subjective opinion.
Model’s front end has a more pronounced nose with the wider grille and narrower headlights. The hood is also longer and the front bumper more modern. The profile lines and fenders are subtly highlighted and the rear has smaller taillights and less cladding.
On the inside:
The cabin of the CX-5 has improved in terms of the design, material quality and equipment. The design follows the familiar steps of the bigger brand mate. The new CX-5 has the driver-oriented dash with the center screen mounted on the top of it and redesigned air vents below.
Mazda has also improved the sound insulation and buyers will love great visibility and driving position. The model will offer 30.9 cubic feet of the cargo space behind the rear seats. When those are not in the use the cargo room expands to 59.6 cubes.
Mazda will offer the base model with cloth upholstery, 17-inch alloy wheels, upgraded 7-inch Connect infotainment system, four speakers, etc.
The higher-spec versions will get upgraded upholstery, heated front seats, power functions, dual-zone climate control, premium sound system and advanced safety systems.
2018 Mazda CX-5 diesel: Powertrain
The base Mazda CX-5 gets the reworked 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine which was optional on the previous version. This engine delivers 187 hp and torque of 185 lb-ft. Mazda now offers this engine with the 6-speed automatic transmission. The previously available 2.0-liter engine isn’t the part of the deal for the new-generation CX-5 in the US.
However, the 2018 Mazda CX-5 diesel version will be on offer as the first diesel-powered Mazda in the US. Under the hood of this model will be Mazda’s familiar 2.2-liter SKYACTIV-D four-cylinder turbodiesel. Mazda hasn’t, unfortunately, revealed the performance and fuel economy specifications of the diesel version for the US. However, it shouldn’t stray far from the Euro-spec variants.
On the Old Continent, Mazda delivers its oil burner in two forms. The less powerful version provides 148 hp and torque of 280 lb-ft. It comes there with both six-speed manual and automatic transitions and both 2WD and 4WD. But a more powerful variant is capable of 173 hp and 310lb-ft of torque. This would likely be the specification of the US version as well.
2018 Mazda CX-5 diesel: Arrival, Price
The 2018 Mazda CX-5 diesel will arrive this fall. The price is yet to be revealed but we expect to be close to mid-30k.
