The current generation of the Mazda CX-5 is approaching to the end of its life cycle. The new generation of this highly popular compact crossover SUV will be revealed soon as the 2018 Mazda CX-5. This model was the first in brand’s lineup to utilize the full Skyactiv strategy suite and also the first pioneering the Kodo design language. The first principle insists on the lightweight construction and on the new generation of efficient powertrains. On the other hand KODO philosophy forms handsome and dynamic styling. For the new model year these principles and CX-5 will evolve to the next level.
The new CX-5 switches to the new generation in manner which is no more than evolution of this current model’s form. It seems that Mazda doesn’t want to risk with brave moves and why would it change the winning strategy. So, the new model will introduce subtle styling updates and there will also be some structural upgrades. Expect also improved powertrains and limited interior changes.
2018 Mazda CX-5: Design, Changes, Platform
The 2018 Mazda CX-5 will enter to the new generation but it won’t shift to the new platform. It will continue to exploit the current underpinning but it will be heavily revised version. Mazda insist to provide best possible driving experience and it will try to pull the most form the current design. So, expect additional weight reduction and improved rigidity of the current platform.
Toned-down exterior design:
Mazda tends to provide class leading driving experience but also considers styling as equally important. In that context the new CX-5 evolves from the current crisp and pronounced creases to somewhat softer lines that have been recognized as similar to the styling that is appalled to larger CX-9.
Softer design will be obvious from model’s profile side. There it will have softer character line and more rounded fenders. The model also seems to have slightly lower but also longer green house.
On the other hand, the front fascia gets new grille design and slightly reshaped headlights. Grille replaces horizontal slats for the mesh pattern. It also sits lower than headlights while on the current model its endpoints touched the center points of them.
On the rear side, the model gets narrower taillights and slightly re-sculpted tailgate.
On the technology ground, the CX-5 should add head-up display. Improvements should also include new driver aids. Expect lane keeping assist, sight recognition system, blind-zone monitoring, etc.
2018 Mazda CX-5: Performance
On the performance front, the 2018 Mazda CX-5 should continue with the same engine options. They will get improved power and torque ratings. We also hope for better fuel economy.
The base engine in the current model is a 2.0 liter inline-4. It can produce 155 hp and torque of 150 pound-feet. More power is available from the 2.5 liter engine version. It maxes 184 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque.
The model will again be available with either front- or four-wheel drive. Expect also both manual and automatic transmissions.
We hoped that Mazda will offer turbocharged 2.5 liter inline-4 form the new CX-9. This engine produces 250 hp and torque of 310 lb-ft. However, it seems that it hasn’t been planned for the CX-5’s scenario.
