The 2018 Range Rover Velar is a new member of the Range Rover family and takes the position between the steel-structured Evoque and the aluminum-based Range Rover Sport. The model embodies the next generation design of automaker’s vehicles with the sleek body and technologically advanced interior. On the other hand, the Velar combines the hardware of the Land Rover and Jaguar. It comes with the three engine options including the turbo diesel unit.
2018 Range Rover Velar: Platform, Design
The new 2018 Range Rover Velar shares its D7 platform with the Jaguar XE and XF sedan but also with the F-Pace SUV which actually has the same wheelbase of 113.1 inches. This aluminum-intensive architecture is made from about 80 percent aluminum and magnesium and steel are also the part of the mixture. The model has 189.0 inches from the bumper to bumper and boasts the drag coefficient of 0.32. That coefficient makes it the most aerodynamically efficient in the Land Rover family.
The Velar is sleek and handsome from the outer perspective despite designers reduced details to the minimum. The lines are straight and clean while the roof line slopes faster than on the Range Rover Sport. The floating roof is available in the black or body color. The Velar also has modern and slim headlights and taillights. The standard wheels are 18 inches and can grow to 22 inches.
Inside, the Velar looks modern thanks to the digitized controls and nice materials. You can count on the 34.4 cu ft of the cargo space behind the rear seats. When the rear seats are not in the use, the cargo room expands to 70.1 cu ft.
Debuting in this model is brand’s twin-screen arrangement which digitized many of the physical controls. This system called Touch Pro Duo consist of the two 10-inch screens placed in the middle of the dash. The model will also offer many other luxuries and tech features.
The Velar will be available in the base, S, SE, R-Dynamic Se and top R-Dynamic HSE trims. The base trim comes with the 18-inch wheels alongside with the 8-speaker sounds system and faux leather and suede upholstery. The S trim upgrades with power and leather seats, LED DRLs, navigation, power liftgate, 11-speakr Meridian sound system, etc. The SE package includes 20-inch wheels, 17 speakers, blind spot monitoring, a sunroof, etc. Moving to the R-Dynamic SE trim means the unique appearance accents, cooled and massaged front seats, and more advanced safety features. The top-level trim comes with upgraded upholstery and 21-inch wheels.
Additional options will also include four-zone climate control, head-up display, a 23-speaker sound system, Terrain Response 2 system, tow-assist package, etc. The model will also offer adaptive cruise control, surround-view system, forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking, etc.
2018 Range Rover Velar: Engine options
On the performance front, the 2018 Range Rover Velar can count on three engine options. Two of them are four-cylinder turbocharged units and one is supercharged V-6.
A 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel from the Ingenium family can produce 180 hp and 317 pound-feet of torque. This engine like the 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 petrol has the same source, the Jaguar F-pace. The V-6 powered Velar will count on 380 hp which should push this version to 60 mph in about 5.3 seconds.
Buyers will also get the chance to pick a smaller 2.0-liter Ingenium petrol engine. This turbocharged petrol unit will provide 247 hp. When equipped with this engine, Velar will need about 6.4 seconds until speedometer hits 60 mph.
JLR will combine all engines with the 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. A low-speed transfer case won’t be available but Velar won’t disappoint you when you leave the pavement. It will use the Terrain Response system for better off-roading. The air suspension will also be available for the better controlled ride.
