Subaru is reading to re-enter the three-row crossover SUV segment after the discontinuation of the Tribeca model in 2014. It doesn’t come as the surprise as Subaru made the preview of this model when debuted the Viziv-7 concept vehicle at the 2016 Los Angeles Show. The prototype version, which was recently spotted testing with the thin camo, seems to be close to the production version and this model is expected to arrive at the 2017 New York Auto Show. Subaru still hides details about this model and before its premiere, it hasn’t even revealed model’s name. However, everybody expecting it to come as the 2018 Subaru Ascent.
2018 Subaru Ascent: Platform, Dimensions
Despite that the arrival of the 2018 Subaru Ascent seems to be very close, nothing has officially been said about its specification. However, we should not be clairvoyant to know that this model will be based on Subaru’s Global platform. It debuted on the 2017 Impreza. This platform means that wide range of powertrain options including the electrified variants could be adopted. But driving quality and modern features will also be on the higher level.
On the other hand, the Ascent model will be so far, the largest Subaru ever. It will be bigger that the Tribeca it replaces and also significantly larger than the Outback. If it would be close to the mentioned concept model, it would ride on the wheelbase of around 117.7 inches. The total length could be around 204.7 inches putting it in the range with the vehicles like the Buick Enclave, and Ford Explorer.
From the visual perspective, the Ascent model should not also come as the surprise when it drops the camo. It is obvious that Subaru will use the familiar design approach already seen on its latest models and far from the concept model.
The new Ascent will adopt the trapezoidal grille and angular headlights. They seem to be very similar as on the Outback and Legacy models. On the profile side, the camo can’t also hide dynamic character line like on the latest Impreza. But the greenhouse has similarities with the Forester model.
2018 Subaru Ascent: Powertrains
Like other details including the interior and equipment, Subaru also successfully hides details about powering options of the new 2018 Subaru Ascent.
We can assume that the base engine version could be a version of the 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine. It produces 250 hp in the Forester model. Expect, however, that the Ascent version of this engine will produce more horsepower and higher torque.
On the other hand, for those seeking more power and better performance, the 3.6-liter flat-six engine from the Outback should come in the combination. What should not also be excluded is the possibility of the hybrid version.
Another aspect, where we should not have doubts is the fact that this model will come with the continuously variable transmission and Subaru’s tested all-wheel drive system.
2018 Subaru Ascent: Arrival, Price
The 2018 Subaru Ascent should be available by the end of this year. Expect the price range to start from around $30, 000.
