It’s not news that growing popularity of crossovers and SUVs has threatened the sales of passenger cars. Actually, if you want some statistics, the sales of SUVs and pickups has jumped for about two percent while sedans have experienced the decrease of around 12 percent. So, it’s not unexpected that brands are focusing on delivering more crossovers and SUVs in their lineup. Tesla Motors also has similar plans, as per some reports. This company seems to be dedicated to expanding its SUV lineup and new model might be 2018 Tesla Model Y.
What this brand wants to achieve is to offer more affordable and compact SUV which should attract a wider population of buyers than larger and more expensive Model X. The Model Y should come shortly after the Model 3 sedan on which platform it would be based. Details about this model are scarce but some assumptions have been made.
2018 Tesla Model Y: Design, Interior
So, nothing has officially been said about design and performance of the new Tesla’s compact SUV. Some reports, however, suggest that this model will ride on the third generation platform. It is the same architecture that will also be the base of the upcoming Model 3. In the same context, two models should share the technology and powertrains.
The styling, on the other hand, should naturally adopt the brand’s current design language and many similarities with Model X should be seen. Of course, the new Y SUV will have smaller proportions than the Model X but the similar design of the grille, headlights, roofline, taillights and more are expected.
The same story is with model’s interior. A large touchscreen will dominate on the dash. Digital instrument panel will sit in front of the steering wheel and model will have comfortable seats.
On the other hand, it will offer cheaper materials in lower trims in order to keep the price in control. There will also be less leg and headroom than on the larger X model. The model should provide good trunk capacity.
The 2018 Tesla Model Y will also include similar technology as the current Tesla’s products including Autopilot driving. It is also possible that this model will feature attractive “Falcon Wings” door design.
2018 Tesla Model Y: Performance
On the performance front, the 2018 Tesla Model Y will adopt the same electric technology as its siblings. Of course, in meantime Tesla will provide next level of performance and driving range. There will also be different powertrain options with different mileage.
The Model X currently uses 75 and 90 kWh batteries and with that, it has projected range of 237 and 257 miles respectively. Even with these options, the Model Y would be able to cover more miles thanks to its smaller proportions and therefore reduced weight.
2018 Tesla Model Y: Launch date, Price
The Tesla Motors should come out with more information about this model soon. Then we will have more details about 2018 Tesla Model Y. However, at this moment we can also tell that this compact SUV will arrive shortly after the launch of the Model 3. It should also have the starting price just above the new sedan model which will start from around $35, 000.
On the end, we want also to say that Tesla Motors is also planning to deliver more electric models by the end of this decade. It should also expand its lineup with a new pickup truck and electric minibus.
