The current third generation of the popular Toyota Highlander has been here since the 2014 model year. However, thanks to the 2017 model year thorough refresh this model is more aggressive looking, more powerful and refined as well as better equipped. It also features good ride quality and standard package of safety technologies. All upgrades helped the Highlander to improve sales and the next version of this model, 2018 Toyota Highlander won’t change radically.
New for 2018:
For the 2018 model year, the Highlander might bring some changes in the color pallet and some equipment regrouping is also possible. Styling and powertrains will continue unchanged and likely the interior.
2018 Toyota Highlander: Styling, Interior
The 2017 model year refresh has made the exterior look of the Highlander more aggressive while attractiveness is the matter of the taste. The grille is larger than the previous version and body-colored strip divides it into upper and lower sections. Each trim also features different grille finish including silver on LE and XLE versions, black on the SE and platinum on the top Platinum trim. All Highlanders come with LED taillights and 18-inch wheels are on the base model.
Inside, the model will accommodate up to eight passengers in pleasant ambient. The front and middle seating rows will provide ample room for adults. But not much space will be available in the rearmost row. Behind the third seat row cargo capacity will measure 14 cu ft. The maximum capacity with stowed seats will be 83.7 cu ft.
The 2018 Toyota Highlander will be available in the same trim levels. That includes LE, LE Plus, XLE, SE and two top Limited and Limited Platinum.
The base trim level will include a 4.2-inch information display, a 6.1-inch touchscreen, six speakers, Siri Eyes Free, cloth upholstery, a tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, etc.
The LE Plus models will upgrade with an 8-inch touchscreen, satellite and HD radio, navigation, fog lights, SofTEx leather upholstery, 8-way power front seats, etc.
The partial leather upholstery, a sunroof, keyless ignition, Entune App Suite, a 120-volt power unit will also be available in the XLE model.
Larger 19-inch wheels, dark grille finish, leather seats with contrasting stitching, ambient lighting, etc. will come on the SE model.
Two top trims will get upgraded perforated upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, driver memory feature, JBL sound system, heated steering wheel, etc.
The safety features that will be available on all models include forward collision warning with emergency braking and pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, automatic high beams, and adaptive cruise control. Available will also be parking sensors and blind—zone system.
2018 Toyota Highlander: Powertrains
The 2018 Toyota Highlander will come with two conventional and a hybrid powertrain.
The base engine will be a 2.7-liter four-cylinder unit which can produce 185 hp and 184 pound-feet of torque. The transmission system with this engine will be a six-speed automatic. Expect fuel economy of 22 mpg combined with the only available front-wheel drive.
The next-level engine option will be a 3.5-liter V-6. This engine features direct injection and stop-start system for the better fuel economy. It will come with the 8-speed automatic transmission and will be available with either front- or all-wheel drive. The power and torque ratings will be 295 hp and 263 pound-feet.
The hybrid powertrain will combine a 3.5-liter V-6 engine with front and rear electric motors. This configuration will be all-wheel drive only and will be good for 306 hp.
The fuel-economy of the V-6 engine will be around 27 mpg combined. The hybrid will return 30 mpg city and 29 mpg highway.
