Volvo continues its offensive which started with the redesigned XC90 for the 2016 model year. Then this brand launched 2017 S90 sedan and V90 station wagon will join to 90 Series as well. For the 2018 model year, Swedish brand is also working on the second-generation of its best-selling XC60. Volvo won’t start there as it will also offer a new entry-level crossover in early 2018. This model could be introduced at the next Shanghai Auto Show and could go on sale as the 2018 Volvo XC40 or even as the 2019 model.
What should we expect from this model?
The new XC40 was spotted while testing in winter conditions and judging by the spy photos this model will adopt very similar design as the 40.1 Concept car which was shown in 2016. The new crossover in Volvo’s lineup will sit on the new platform which debuted on the mentioned Concept car. It will also be available with a range of petrol and diesel engines while it should also get plug-in hybrid powertrain. Volvo will also equip this compact car with the newest safety features.
2018 Volvo XC40: Platform, Design
The 2018 Volvo XC40 will be the first Volvo’s production model to adopt the new Compact Modular Architecture which Volvo co-developed with its parent company Geely. This platform is the distinct version from the Scalable Product Architecture developed to underpin lighter and smaller vehicles like other models from the 40 Series including the V40 hatchback and S40 small sedan. What is also important about this platform is the fact that it promises implementation of advanced electrification, connectivity and autonomous driving plus refined dynamics.
On the other hand, judging by the heavily camouflaged prototype, it seems that productions version won’t differ much from the 40.1 Concept car. The prototype seems to have concept’s contours in its front area as well as angled C-pillars. Aside from that, it should adopt some styling elements from the XC90. The new crossover will feature concave grille, Thor hammer headlights and L-Shaped taillights. The side panels should display curved-up beltline.
We don’t know much about model’s interior as spy shots don’t show it and Volvo also hides details about it. However, we expect some similarities with the XC90. The model will likely adopt familiar clean and elegant design with the real wood and chrome accents. It will also include vertical-oriented center touchscreen with the latest infotainment features.
What Volvo also promises for the 40 Series is the most advanced standard safety package which should include Volvo’s Pilot Assist.
2018 Volvo XC40: Powertrains
In the engine department, the new 2018 Volvo XC40 will offer three- and four-cylinder engines. A new 1.5-liter engine with three cylinders will be available with close to 200 hp. The four-cylinder engines will also be available and petrol-powered models should have T2 and T3 badges. Outside the US, Volvo should also offer D2, D3 as well as D5 diesel powertrains.
However, the most powerful should be the models with the T5 badge. They should include the T5 Twin Engine setup similar like in the XC90. This plug-in powertrain should consist of 180 hp three-cylinder petrol engine, 74-hp electric motor and battery pack. Total output is roughly estimated at 250 hp.
The front-wheel drive based hybrid model will include a new 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. An addition rear-mounted motor should power the rear wheels in the four-wheel drive option. Some sources suggest the electric-alone range of up to 30 miles.
2018 Volvo XC40: Arrival, Price
The new 2018 Volvo XC40 crossover, in the best-case scenario, should go on sale in late 2017. However, early 2018 is more likely.
The model will go against rivals such as Mercedes GLA, Infiniti QX30, BMW X1 and Audi Q3. It should be competitively priced from around $31, 000.
