Audi is working on its first mass production car and unsurprisingly it will get the form of the SUV. Audi hinted the arrival of the all-electric SUV with the Audi e-tron Quattro concept at the 2015 Frankfurt Auto Show. Like the concept version, the new electric SUV will be sized between the Q5 and Q7 models but won’t carry the Q6 name as was thought initially. Instead, the new model will arrive as the 2019 Audi e-tron Quattro electric SUV and the prototype version has already been spotted while undergoing pre-production tests. The model seems to be close to production-ready form but the US launch is expected in late 2018. Audi promises two more electric models by 2020 including the e-tron Sportback version and brand’s rival for the BMW i3.
2019 Audi e-tron Quattro electric SUV: Design
Based on what we leaned from the spy photos, the 2019 Audi e-tron Quattro electric SUV will get some inspiration from the e-tron concept car but will also share much design cues with brand’s recently updated SUVs. The production version will look sleeker and sit lower than brand’s current SUVs and will be sized like the concept version between the Q5 and Q7.
The front section of the model appears to have slightly different grille design than the concept model while the headlights share the modern design of the concept with few tweaks. From the profile, the model will be defined with the slightly sloped roofline and pronounced beltline. The profile is sportier than on brand’s current SUV models and to some level coupe-like but the related e-tron Sportback version will arrive after this model and with a more coupe-like profile.
The rear of the model seems to have sculpted tailgate and similar taillights like the concept car. The steeply inclined rear glass and tailgate spoiler also add sports design cues.
As for the cabin design, it is expected to draw inspiration from the A8 sedan. Horizontally oriented dash will have multiple screens and few physical controls. The new generation virtual cockpit design will, of course, be present as well as the tons of Audi’s luxury features. The model also pretends to the leadership in the level of the autonomous driving technology which will move to the next grade with this model.
2019 Audi e-tron Quattro electric SUV: Powertrain
Powering the 2019 Audi e-tron Quattro electric SUV will be the similar setup as what Audi installed in the e-tron concept. A single electric motor will power the from wheels while two units will be reserved for the rear. Audi said that concept’s powertrain can provide 429 hp and similar number should be reachable for the production version. On the other hand, reports also suggest the entry-level variant with a single motor for each axle. But also more potent version will be available.
What is crucial for the electric car is, of course, the electric range. Audi promised all-electric model when battery technology reaches the capability for 300+ miles. The concept model had a 95-kWh battery pack and promised the range of up to 310 miles. That number is for the European cycle but expect at least 250 miles for the US version.
2019 Audi e-tron Quattro electric SUV: Arrival, Price
The production of the 2019 Audi e-tron Quattro electric SUV should start sometime in 2018. The US-launch is expected in late 2018. We expect the price in $80k area.
