BMW’s the most successful crossover SUV, the X5 has been undergoing testing for a long time now. When the first prototypes appeared on the roads it was expected that the fourth generation X5 will arrive two years earlier than it was a usual generation cycle. However, the new X5 won’t debut as the 2018 model yet BMW confirmed the late in the year debut as the 2019 BMW X5.
When it comes to the changes, BMW still hides many details we would like to know. The prototype models reveal not dramatic exterior changes and the same will be with the interior design. However, BMW will go with deeper and more important upgrades. The new model will switch to the new platform and introduce new electronics. There will, of course, be diverse powertrain options including the performance version and the plug-in hybrid model eventually.
2019 BMW X5: Styling and structural changes
The latest prototype of the 2019 BMW X5 didn’t lose the camouflage but we can recognize evolutionary changes to model’s exterior styling. BMW is known for making non-drastic changes on the new models and the new-mid-size X5 won’t be an exception.
The new-gen X5 will adopt the larger interpretation of the signature kidney grille and the pair of the new headlights with the new LED elements. BMW also reshaped the front bumper. The profile also seems to have more defined lines and we also detect more sculpted rear side. The taillights also have much slimmer shape and new style.
The new Platform:
More importantly, the new X5 will benefit from the structural upgrades. The model switches to the CLAR platform which underpins the 5- and 7-Series saloons and will also be under the skin of the new 3-Series model. This platform already made the transition to the high-riding class to the X3 model and will also be the base of the new X7. It will bring greater rigidity and performance of model structure plus the weight reduction.
Inside the cabin, the upcoming X5 won’t also be unfamiliar form. The model will follow the similar design theme as the latest 5- and 7-Series models. However, the model should gain more inches which will provide more interior comfort.
The mid-size SUV will also integrate brand’s newest tech including the iDrive system as well as the wireless Apple Car Paly. The new version will keep the familiar iDrive controller on the center console. However, the new infotainment system will provide better responsiveness and intuitive digital controls. Expect also updated menu pages and controlling via the voice and gesture. The model will also implement the latest semi-autonomous tech.
2019 BMW X5: Powertrain options
As for the powering options, BMW still keeps the specs from the public. The 2019 BMW X5 will, of course, offer multiple powertrain types and performance. The new platform and weight reduction combined with the new engines will also contribute to the better efficiency.
The engine range will include a 2.0-liter four and 3.0-liter six engines with latter producing 300-hp range. The same displacements will also be available in the diesel form outside the US. The twin-turbo V-8 will be under the hood of the high-performing M version with the power figures reported to be in the 600-plus area. The plug-in hybrid version is also expected.
2019 BMW X5: Arrival, Price
The new 2019 BMW X5 will make the global debut late in the year. The price range is estimated to start at close $60, 000.
