Chevrolet introduced the third-generation Equinox for the 2018 model year. The newest generation of the Equinox is both smaller and lighter but with nearly identical cargo and passengers space as the previous version. The new Equinox has also more expressive styling and better-trimmed cabins. The newest tech and safety equipment is available in this model but it also offers a broad range of turbocharged four-cylinder engines including the diesel unit. With all improvements for the 2018 version, this compact crossover SUV is a much better competitor to models like the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue, Subaru Forester, etc.
The year after the thorough redesign the 2019 Chevy Equinox will arrive with minor changes in the equipment organization and likely with new exterior and interior color combinations. Mechanically and visually, this model will return unchanged. We expect the same trim options as well.
2019 Chevy Equinox: Design
The newest, third-generation Equinox switched to the new GM D2XX platform that is also common for the Buick Envision and GMC Terrain. Thanks to the modern lightweight structure and smaller body proportions, the Equinox is about 400 pounds lighter than the previous generation.
However, with the structural improvements, Chevrolet also made the Equinox more attractive. The front of the model sharers similar styling treatment as the Malibu and Cruze models. The profile has expressive character line which divides into two lines in front of the front door handles. The raked rear pillar and wraparound rear glass add also unique look in the class.
For the 2019 model year, Chevy won’t change anything on models look and structure. What could be on the offer are new wheel options and body color combinations.
Inside the Equinox will be carry over as well. The redesign removed 5 inches from the wheelbase but changes in important cabin measurements are minimal. The buyers can still enjoy in comfortable seats and enough backseat room. The available cargo space is 29.9 cubes with all seats up and max capacity is 63.5 cubes.
The model will come with the same trim options and with all modern equipment one would need. The base models will ride on 17-inch wheels and will include automatic headlights and LED DRLs, keyless entry and ignition, tilt-and-telescopic steering wheel, a 7-inch display based infotainment system with smartphone compatibility features, six-speaker sound system, etc.
Upper trim levels, the LS, LT and Premier will bring more tech and luxury features. Available will be 18- and 19-inch wheels, an 8-inch display, premium sound system, heated seats, upgraded upholstery, automatic climate control, wireless charging, etc.
For the safety purposes, one can demand the blind-spot monitoring system with rear cross traffic alert, all around parking cameras, lane departure warning and mitigation, forward collision warning and emergency braking. These systems are now available in higher trims while some rival offer most of them by default. Chevy might make these systems more available in lower trims and add adaptive cruise control.
2019 Chevy Equinox: Powertrains
The engine options and mechanics will remain the same on the 2019 Chevy Equinox as on the current versions. The standard engine will stay a 1.5-liter turbo four-cylinder. It can produce 170 hp and torque of 203 pound-feet. A six-speed automatic gearbox will come in the combination with this engine. The fuel economy will be 28 mpg or 26 mpg combined depending on the FWD or AWD.
A more powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine will provide 252 hp and torque of 260 lb-ft. This engine, Chevy will match with the 9-speed auto gearbox. The fuel economy will remain around 25 mpg combined.
The most fuel efficient will be a 1.6-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel version. This engine comes with the six-speed automatic and can deliver 137 hp and torque of 240 lb-ft. The diesel-powered Equinox should return 32 mpg combined.
