Ford Explorer is one of the most popular SUVs in the US. It has the long history and has gained the strong fan base. In its current form, it is a family-friendly vehicle with great ride and handling and also with all-weather capability. This modern SUV also offers a wide range of configuration options with plenty of available features including attractive Sport appearance package. However, the current generation of this model, which debuted for the 2011 model year, is closing to its end and testing model has been spied several times. The prototype seems to be in the early stage of the development and we will get the new generation model as the 2019 Ford Explorer.
What should be new?
Based on what we know so far, the new Explorer will switch to the new platform. The styling should evolve slightly and Ford will, of course, equip it with the latest tech and safety features. The new model will also bring improvements in powertrain range and fuel economy.
2019 Ford Explorer: New platform, Design
The current generation Explorer sits on the D4 platform which is also the base of the Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT. The Explorer adopted this platform in 2011 when ditched the body-on-frame architecture for the car-based design. However, the new 2019 Ford Explorer will come based on the new platform which has code name D6. This platform has the similar design as VW’s MQB architecture and allows front, rear and all-wheel drive applications. It will underpin Lincoln’s future vehicles like the new MKT as well as the new Explorer. Its modern, lightweight design will help the new Explorer to save some weight and improve efficiency.
On the other hand, we can’t tell much about model’s exterior design. The prototype was heavily camouflaged but according to its contours we expect slight evolution from the current design language. The model seems to have very similar design with clean edges and sharp corners. However, Ford will likely achieve new effect with redesigned lighting, new grille, and wheels. It will also offer a wide range of available textures and cladding. The popular Sport appearance package should again be available from the lower trims.
We can’t tell much about model’s interior as spy photos haven’t been available yet. However, what we will surely get is quite and comfortable cabin loaded with modern tech and fresh materials and textures. We don’t know would model change in size but generous cargo space and leg room should be available.
Ford will, of course, equip this model with the latest tech and safety achievements but we will know more about that when this model debuts probably at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show.
2019 Ford Explorer: Powertrains
In the engine department, we should expect some improvements. However, the new 2019 Ford Explorer will likely continue to exploit the 2.3-liter and 3.5-liter EcoBoost engines which should come in updated form. On the other hand, the naturally-aspirated V-6 which powers the base version of this model could be discontinued or we could get a more fuel-efficient replacement.
The model will also benefit from its lightweight structure which will have the positive effect on its fuel economy and performance. Ford will also work on model’s suspension and steering and we should expect an even more refined ride.
2019 Ford Explorer: Arrival
We expect that new 2019 Ford Explorer will go on sale in summer 2018. Before it will debut at Los Angeles or Detroit Auto Show.
