It’s not the secret that Mercedes is working on the new version of its iconic G-Class aka G-Wagen model. The prototype of the boxy SUV was spotted on several occasions while testing covered in black/white camo but with the familiar boxy body design. Mercedes hasn’t revealed much about the first full redesign of its old-school SUV but reports suggesting that new G-Wagen will keep its retro character but will be bigger, more comfortable and more efficient.
The model will get new underpinning and engine options while the interior will get modern features. The new military-grade SUV will also be lighter but capable again for extreme off-roading. Mercedes will likely launch the new model as 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen to celebrate its 40th anniversary.
2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen: Design
Based on what we have from the spy photos and other sources, the new 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen will get the wider truck and new suspension for improved on and off-road ride. According to some reports, the new model will gain 4 inches in its width but will have the shorter body. Wider truck combined with new underpinning should provide better stability and overall ride comfort but the redesigned G-Wagen should also be lighter. The model will retain body-on-frame design but redesigned chassis and usage of the modern material mix should as some sources suggesting lead to weight reduction of about 440 lbs.
On the other hand, the visual aspect won’t lose its old-school charm but will get several new touches. The new version seems to have more prominent hood and new headlights. The changes will also be seen on the rear lights as well as on the grille and bumpers. The AMG-badged versions will get unique elements like the latest models with this badge. They will have the unique grille and exterior accents combined with side exhausts.
On the inside:
While the exterior will stay close to the roots, the model gets modernized interior. The new G-Wagen will gain brand’s new infotainment system as well as the air vents and trim that are in line with brand’s newest models. The new SUV will also get improved safety treatment and better sound insulation.
On the other hand, the wider chassis and new suspension will also improve the ride comfort and also expand the interior space.
2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen: Powertrains
The improvements on the chassis, wider track and new suspension will provide better stability. But, Mercedes will also do corrections on the steering system. The model will get an independent front suspension but will keep similar ground clearance and a live rear axle. It will also keep the low range gear box and three locking differentials.
As for the engine options, the 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen should get a new inline-6 engine. This engine will likely come in the combination with the 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox. The twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 is expected to replace the 5.5-liter V-8 that produces 550 hp in the current G63 AMG. However, the range-topping 6.0-liter V12 will remain in the combination.
It will be interesting, on the other hand, to see what will be improvements in the fuel efficiency and performance thanks to the new structure and running gear.

The new 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen will likely debut this year but the sales will start sometime in 2018. We will see what will be the effect of the upgrades on the price range.
