Mercedes was recently spotted testing two of its SUV models. The full-size GLS-Class lives the second generation now and will arrive as the next-generation model for the 2020 model year. Based on the same platform but mid-sized GLE Class is also undergoing testing and this model will enter the new generation as the 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE.
The first prototype of the new-gen GLE was caught in mid-2016 and some expected it as the 2018 model. However, recent spy shots reveal that the GLE is close to the production-ready form and should debut later in the year.
The model will change the platform and powertrains but will also wear a new styling. With the new mechanics and the sheet metal, Mercedes will also bring the latest technologies and interior design.
2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE: Design, New Platform
The recent photos of the new-gen 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE reveal the re-sculpted body and redesigned styling elements. The recipe is familiar from bread’s recently redesigned models. The GLE sports larger grille version accompanied by the new more angular design of the headlights.
The front bumper also boasts more muscular lines. The profile gets more prominent fender flares but the door panels have more rounded shape without of some creases and the waistline seem higher.
The rear is also slightly reshaped and with the new taillights. Mercedes will again offer different grille versions depending on the chosen trim. The AMG-branded models will boast more aggressive bumpers and stance.
The model will also ride on the new MHA platform reserved for the model from the GLC-Class up. It should provide reduced overall weight and better efficiency.
Interior will also follow the design cues and use the equipment from the brand’s most recent models. The dash will apply new dual-screen setup and brand’s newest infotainment platform. The MBUX system from the latest A-Class should be found in this model as well.
Bellow the center screen will be air vents and climate controls. This version will have square vents instead of familiar round units.
The model will also use the latest safety equipment found in brand’s newest models.
2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE: Power Options
The new 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE will offer the rear- and all-wheel drive options. The nine-speed automatic transmission will be standard on most models.
The engine range should mimic those from the E-Class. That includes a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and new inline-6 for the standard versions. The AMG-badged models should appear in two variants. The AMG GLE53 will likely use the electrified inline-6 setup. Under the hood of the AMG 63 will be a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-6.
The diesel powertrain won’t travel to the US. The GLE will likely offer the plug-in hybrid version as well.
2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE: Release, Price
The new 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLE will make the premiere late in the year. The sales should start in early 2019. A small price increase is expected.
